Tell us about it! Will's blog
I don't know if I qualify as a Flint School graduate, but I did have the
"pleasure" of attending Holiday Harbor Seafaring Camp in Sarasota,
Florida in the summer of 1971 ( or was it '72, I don't remember) but I
do remember it was quite an experience. In case you did not know it, it
was a summer camp housed in an old motel located next to the Stolls'
corporate marina "Holiday Harbor Seafaring Resort". George and Betty
Stoll were there as well as their two daughters. The eldest was in her
thirties, I think and she had a 5 year old boy. The youngest was just
in her twenties and she provided a lot of adolencent boys alot of
panting and fantizising in her bikinis and hot pants outfit which we
called her "Yellow Yummy Sexy Suit".
During the eight weeks I was there
I worked on my ranks, although I never did make it up to Mate-Sail. We
went on cruises to Gasparilla Island led by the Stolls's antiquated
Racing Yacht "The Grand Sport". It was quite a sight to see 15-20 boats
going down the Intercostal Waterway all tethered together, steered by
teenagers, especially in the radical '70's. The highlight of the summer
was our cruise to St Petersburg, FL to tour the replica of the MGM
"Bounty" which was used in the 1962 Marlon Brando film. We spent an
entire day touring the ship, and then went to see a movie at dilapidated
old movie house that evening. As luck would have it, the biggest
thunderstorm to hit St Petersburg in years started during the movie and
soaked all of our bedding on board the Grand Sport and the other ships.
When we got back to the Bounty and found our stuff soaked, the Park
Ranger on board the ship allowed us to sleep on board the ship. We were
the first group of people to sleep on board the ship since the movie was
shot.
You are right though about some of the poeple who attended the school as
being a little resistant to discipline. We had the same type of group
at HHSC. One guy in particular was named Steve Silver. He never got
along with anyone and his famous tagline was "Bitch..Bitch..Bitch!
You're making me homesick!" Another guy with a last name of Ostrich we
called "Feathers" because of his feminine nature. A BIGGG guy from Texas
named Jim Bush who wouldn't take shit from anyone. Even the Counselors
and RA's were afraid of him. The girls were nice, though. One I
remember in particular was named Cookie Casperson, a real cool blond.
Another was named Sandy, the best looking girl in camp.
Most of the camp counselors had their heads together, but I am sure they
were looking forward to leaving after the summer ended.
It would be great to find a website about this camp and the people who
attended it. I would be very interested in finding out what they did
with their lives. Also, what happened to the Stolls? From what i can
tell, they sold the Schooners in the late 1980's. Are they still alive
or what. Please let me know.
