Google Street View — self-portrait

One google street cam photographs anotherSo there I was, minding my own business, looking at samples of Google Maps’ “Street View” to pique my eight-year-old niece’s interest…

And I wound up at the Deadhorse, Alaska airport. It’s not really remarkable — just a remote stretch of land, mostly. Except for two things: one is that it’s about as far north as the roaming Google-street-view cameras have been, at least in the United States.

The other is that Google sent TWO street cameras to film this remote stretch of midnight sun! Can you say overkill? This isn’t downtown Berlin, or Times Square, or Picadilly Circus, or even the outskirts of Punxatawney. Maybe they sent two in case there was an automotive breakdown so one driver could carry the other home? Or are they supposed to be checking up on each other?

iPhone 3.0 Firmware Update

Holy cow — the new iPhone 3.0 OS is so advanced I can now delete multiple pictures! But wait, there’s more: I can delete multiple pictures mounted from my desktop, too! Back in the old 2.x days it would RESET THE IPHONE when trying to delete two or more pictures at once.

On top of that, the photos show up in chronological order! How snazzy can you get?

There’s a Pulitzer, or Emmy, or Nobel, in there somewhere.

All kidding aside, it’s a nice new feature set.

  • You can also search all your content (drag left from the home-home screen, or hit your home button just one more time, to open the Search interface).
  • There’s a voice-memo application now, too.
  • And with iPhone OS 3.0 you can now see how long your phone conversations have been. Plus, you know more than just who called, but which phone number they called from (instead of just ‘Diode’ it says ‘Diode / mobile’). Sweet!
  • Double-tap just about any text and you get a little select-o-rama interface. Drag the ends where you want them, then tab ‘copy’ and now you can paste it anywhere text is allowed. Nice!

Bill Gates in praise of the Macintosh

Look who said this about the Macintosh in its early days:

To create a new standard, it takes something that’s not just a little bit different. It takes something that’s really new, and really captures people’s imagination. And the Macintosh, of all the machines I’ve ever seen, is the only one that meets that standard.

When swapping out your iPhone at Apple tech support…

Apple products tend to be high quality, but sometimes there’s a glitch that can mess with your life. Check the new phone and make sure you don’t get a lemon.

The background here is that I went all the way to Louisville (nearest Apple store is over 90 miles away for me) to have them look at my broken Ring/Silent switch (it had snapped off); they swapped out the whole phone. I got almost all the way back home and found that the “new” phone had a microphone problem. If I plugged in the Apple headset, no problem; it was only when I tried to use the iPhone as a “candybar” style handset that there was any trouble. I made it back to the Apple store with 12 minutes to spare before their closing time… and they Apologized profusely and gave me a second “new” phone.

So — here are some things to watch out for when you’re taking in a misbehaving iPhone to your nearby Apple store for a swap-out:

  • You did back up (sync) your phone, first, right? It’s likely that the Apple support folks will give you a new phone, meaning that you surrender your old phone to them. They’ll delete all your private data, and the only way to get it back is to restore it to your “new” phone via iTunes.
  • Can you hear me now? My new iPhone had intermittent microphone problems. That is, I could hear whoever called me, but they could only hear me 30% of the time. Unless you can simulate morse code via the “dial keypad” somehow, this ain’t too useful.
  • Can I hear you? Make sure your handset speaker is working, too! If you can’t hear them, it’s not much of a conversation, is it?
  • Confirm your data connectivity. If you have access to both 3G and Edge networks, test the 3G of course, then turn off 3G (settings > general > network > ‘enable 3G’) to confirm that Edge is operational. Look at some google maps in an area where you haven’t cached any ‘map tiles’ lately, and browse via Safari for a few screens.
  • What firmware is on the phone they gave you? My first “new” phone of the day was already set for 3.0.1 which was great, until I ran into the intermittent-microphone problem. The second “new” phone had been on the shelf for a while, as it only had 2.2 on it. I tried to restore my docs via laptop in the car on the way home but without an internet connection it could only get part-way there, since it couldn’t update to 3.0.1. It was a bit frustrating to wonder on the way home if I’d be able to get the new device working as well as my original had been.

So when you get back home (or to the office) with your “new” phone, treat it like a new phone first, and make sure it’s been updated to the latest firmware. Then right-click (or control-click) on your phone in the iTunes interface, and choose “restore from backup”. Here’s where you pick your latest “sync” to restore from, and now you should be off to the races.

How to recover your “sa” password on MS SQL Server

So you’ve forgotten your “sa” password? Can’t get in to your Microso~1 SQL Server as administrator? If you’ve got other users created already… no problemo!

Raul Garcia’s How to recover from losing your SA password is a nice fix which just saved my bacon! Maybe it can save yours, too. (It talks about SQL Server 2005 but it also appears to work on SQL Server 2000, thank goodness!)

This website is my personal space on the web, which I use for fun… and to back up my business activity. At Serensoft we help colleges and universities, including administration, faculty and students — “higher education”, for short — by providing workflow analysis, ERP selection and support, implementations and upgrades, business-intelligence and reporting assistance, open source tools, learning management systems, and more.

At Serensoft we focus on higher education! We don’t dilute our attenion across other industries… We’re the only Cognos Solution Provider that’s higher-education-only.

I’m also experimenting with memberships at flickr.com, elgg.net, itToolbox.com, LinkedIn.com, kaboodle.com, and a handful of others as well.
